Dean's Message

Professor Ryuji Yamamoto

Dear Distinguished Scholars,

It is our great pleasure and honor to invite you all to the 19th Annual Asian Law Institute (ASLI) Conference, which will be held virtually on the weekend of May 28 and 29, 2022.

Today’s world is facing many challenges, ranging from global warming to uneven distribution of wealth, or from diminishing natural resources to infringement of human rights. Asia is not an exception and we believe that it is an important task of lawyers to tackle these issues. Therefore, we have chosen “Sustainable Development and Law in Asia” as the general theme for the upcoming Conference.

We would also like to emphasize the importance of our Faculty hosting the 19th ASLI Conference in 2022. In recent years, interest in Asia and Asian law has been growing rapidly in Japan as economic and social ties with other Asian jurisdictions strengthen. To give more weight to Asian law in our legal education and research, the Graduate Schools for Law and Politics of the University of Tokyo have launched the Asian Law Education Program in 2017 as a five-year project. The year 2022 marks the start of the 2nd term of the Program, and we are looking very much forward to reinforcing our relationships with international scholars focusing on Asian law at the Conference.

The resurgence of the COVID-19 pandemic with the new Omicron variant and retightened travel restrictions have forced us to decide holding the conference virtually. Although it is very unfortunate that we have been unable to meet each other in person for three years in a row, we would like to assure you that the 19th ASLI Conference will provide another great occasion to exchange views on various issues and to cultivate mutual understanding and friendship among Asian law scholars.

See you all virtually in May!

Professor Ryuji YAMAMOTO
Dean, Graduate Schools for Law and Politics,
